Erich Maria Remarque, a veteran German infantryman, and well-known author wrote the classic World War I novel of the same name, which was adapted into the Netflix series All Quiet on the Western Front.

It was written in 1929 by Remarque, and since of its somber picture of the futility of war, it’s still taught in the curriculum today.

The narrative follows teenagers Paul Baumer, Albert and Muller as they voluntarily join the German army, riding a surge of nationalist sentiment that quickly fades after encountering the cruel realities of life at the front. Paul’s ideas about the adversary and the virtues and vices of combat quickly disintegrate.

Paul, however, must fight to the bitter end as the clock ticks the Armistice, with no other goal in mind than to fulfill the ambition of the top brass to conclude the war on a German onslaught.

The impact that the war has on those fighting in it, rather than the conflict itself, will be the focus of the film. Not the high level officers who are sent to safer areas away from the war zone but those who live in the dirty trenches and are all the time afraid of being shot or bombed.

It will also highlight how challenging it’s for a front-line soldier who has seen horrific things to transition back to regular civilian life.
