The show attempts to show a journey of passion and endurance, from spectacular performances in small towns in Florida to the crowning of the King and Queen of the Seas in the Bahamas.

The trailer instantly puts an incredible spin on the screen by showing the magnificent environment under the sea, where the MerPeople go about their daily lives.

While everybody often wonders how a person can become a mermaid and hold their breath for so long, the trailer quickly changes its tone and takes us above the ocean to experience the truth.

As a ‘half billion dollar enterprise,’ we soon learn that the mermaid industry can be much more significant than we imagine.

People can pursue their love of fishtails through pageants, conventions, contests, auditions, shows, and plenty of other ways.

One of the cast members describes the widespread reaction with the remark, ‘Is this work?’ as many don’t think that this can be someone’s main means of livelihood.

Soon we connect with a mermaid from Arkansas, who believes that she cannot develop much in the established place and labels herself “without land.”

After that, we meet Blix, who followed him to entertain people and may have been the first to release his music there. But, when another professional warns people not to realize what they’re getting into, is the unique job opportunity as miraculous as it seems?

They must audition for their part, just like any other job, and we learn that mermaiding is a dangerous skill at its core.

Forcing yourself to stay underwater for a long time can have several negative effects, including hypothermia.

After expertly dipping their feet into the underworld, they swing into the light side with a man trying to perform the best underwater performance ever.

With everybody in front of them, what motivates people to follow this professional path, and can everybody follow their dreams is what the series will explore.

You won’t feel closer to the subjects or the mermaid society at the end of the series… You may feel as if you understand less.

MerPeople release date

The documentary series will debut on Netflix on 23 May 2023. The series consists of four episodes, each lasting about 45 minutes.

The episodes will follow unemployed mermaids trying to find work, the audition process, the MerMagica Con, and how they become mermaid tails.
