Richard Belzer’s death was reported by his longtime friend, Bill Scheft. According to him, the 78-year-old actor died peacefully at home with his family in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, in the south of France.
Another person who gave a somewhat concrete reason for Richard’s death is Scheft. He is a writer who is working on a documentary about the life of Richard Belzer.
According to Scheft, even though there isn’t any reason for the standup comedian’s death, Richard was rather suffering from circulatory and respiratory problems because of his age.
The first person to announce his death on social media was comedian Laraine Newman on Twitter. The comedian worked alongside Richard Belzer in SNL for a total of 5 years (from 1975-1980).
Laraine paid tribute to her co-star by writing the following words, “I’m saddened to hear of the passing of Richard Belzer. I love this man so much.”
Laraine also wrote the following, “He was one of my first friends when I got to New York to do ‘SNL.’ We used to go out to dinner every week at Sheepshead Bay for lobster. One of the funniest people ever. Master at crowd work. RIP dear.”
