The Big End of Season 3 Explained: What Happened in the End?

The Great Season 3
A parade

Pugachev’s rebellion and survival from season 2 has left Russia in ruins by the time The Great season 3 ends, and Catherine is on the verge of losing her position as Empress.

By hiding Peter’s death, she ruined her relationship with the court and developed a despair that made her careless about the future of Russia.

But after miraculously preserving her life, she rises again to defend Russia. She accomplishes this by making a number of critical choices that end the rebel and hold her friends accountable for their betrayal. Three important orders are made by Catherine after assembling her cabinet.

First, she makes the choice to send Maxim to a military academy so that he can improve his attitude to violence and receive the training essential to succeed Catherine as the army commander.

She then gives the order for the cannonballs, one of which is Pugachev’s head, to be fired at Pugachev’s headquarters.

Finally, Catherine forces Archie to approve two laws: one declares that the comet expected to pass over Russia is a divine indication of her authority, and the other frees all serfs under the church.

In response, Catherine demands that Archie be tortured and executed before being buried alive for betraying her by cooperating with Pugachev.

Will Catherine Be Able To Rule Russia Without Peter?

The Great Season 3
Oh! Online

The question of whether Catherine will continue to rule Russia without Peter finally becomes the primary focus of the third season of The Great.

Peter’s sudden death only worsens Catherine’s ability to rule, despite the proven fact that he was once a vital obstacle to Catherine’s power.

The ideals she once deeply cared about have lost their meaning as a result of her defeat and depression, and she even shows suicidal signs. As a result, for a large part of the episodes, it’s ambiguous whether Catherine will get over losing Peter or let Russia and herself get worse.

The conclusion, however, provides a solution. It seems that Catherine is back in action as Empress of Russia after defeating Pugachev and making Archie suffer for his betrayal.

She can still pursue her original goals of improving Russia even although Peter’s death has changed her, particularly in the sense that she now has a new advantage for her.

The third season of The Great in addition to historical evidence suggests that Catherine still has a number of problems to deal with.

For example, the conspiracy by Georgina, Hugo, and Agnes still succeeded, and Pugachev’s insurrection could still be going strong because Arkady intended to lead his own resistance.

Will Catherine Learn About Orlo’s Death?

The Great Season 3
Insider

The truth about Orlo’s death is another important mystery that Catherine may (or may not) uncover in the coming seasons.

Catherine and Peter are walking through the woods in the opening episode of season 3 of The Great when Catherine hears a noise and runs that way.

The two resume their journey after seeing nothing, but in reality, Catherine shot and killed Orlo, who was slipping through the forest to kill Peter.

Despite the proven fact that the audience is totally aware of the reality, this turned out to be the first big surprise of Catherine’s season and an enormous enigma.

It is doubtful that Catherine will ever learn that she killed Orlo. There were no witnesses to Orlo’s murder, and in the end his body was eaten by bears, so there isn’t any record of how or where he died, despite the proven fact that this is a facet of a significant plot affecting Catherine.

This raises the question of why the showrunners killed Orlo in the first place, since there is a possibility that Catherine won’t ever learn what happened to him.

It could be that Orlo and Catherine’s relationship was over and needed to be put to rest permanently, or that Orlo’s death could, in fact, be addressed in future seasons.
